Education/Experience/Employment
L. Susie Stewart studied at Oakland Community College and has received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in K-12 Art Education and teaching degree from Kendall College of Art and Design of FSU. Since 2015 she has worked for Grand Rapids Public Schools, as an art teacher, and continues working for Kendall College of Art and Design as a Continuing Education Instructor and volunteers to teach in the community and for non-profit organizations. She has completed training and received the certificate for a Registered Behavior Technician (2018). Currently she is working on her Masters of Art Education at Western Michigan University. She began her career right at home, reinforcing one of her favorite sayings - "Nothing is for nothing".
When Susie's children were small she was introduced to the idea that she could teach her children to read. Never intending to do anything more than that, this started her down the teaching road. Living a life of no regrets, she schooled her own children for 16 years, teaching them with a goal to make life long learners. Each child was presented information according to their learning style, in a different way, with a desire for her students to understand, and learn at a steady rate, according to their unique abilities. Integrating subjects, through unit studies from ancient to modern history were the most successful ways to teach and learn. These teaching skills reinforce 21st Century teaching practices.
Her studies at Kendall College in art education reinforced her studies that had just begun at home. Networking with other people, professional teachers, and reading books on teaching are her passions. Other goals are to further study painting, drawing and history. Teachers are learners and learning can never stop.
